DeepSeek’s V3.2 costs $0.32 per million tokens. Claude Opus 4.7 costs $10.00. That’s a 31x difference for models that, depending on your workload, might be interchangeable.

The Hangzhou-based lab released V3.2 in December 2025, and the pricing page reads like a misprint: $0.28 per million input tokens at cache miss, $0.028 at cache hit, $0.42 for output. For comparison, Anthropic charges $5 input and $25 output for Opus 4.7. OpenAI’s GPT-5.4 runs $2.50 input, $15 output. DeepSeek isn’t competing on price. It’s competing on a different planet.

The Benchmark Position

The price gap isn’t free. DeepSeek V3.2 scores 42 on Artificial Analysis’s Intelligence Index; the frontier models—Claude Opus 4.7, GPT-5.4, Gemini 3.1 Pro Preview—all hit 57. That’s a 15-point gap at the top of the leaderboard, which is meaningful for tasks that require the most capable reasoning.

But the more interesting comparison is one tier down. Claude Sonnet 4.6 scores 44 on the same index and costs $6.00 blended. DeepSeek V3.2 scores 42 at $0.32—within two points of Sonnet at one-nineteenth the price. For many enterprise applications, two points of benchmark performance difference is noise. The model supports the features that matter for production use: 128K context window, function calling, JSON output, and two operational modes—standard chat and a “thinking” mode with extended reasoning. It won’t match Opus or GPT-5.4’s million-token context, but 128K handles most document processing and agent workflows.

The Enterprise Calculation

The math becomes stark at scale. An application processing 10 billion tokens monthly—a reasonable volume for a mid-sized enterprise deployment—costs $320,000 annually on DeepSeek V3.2. The same volume on Claude Opus 4.7 runs $10 million. On GPT-5.4, $5.6 million.

Even if DeepSeek requires 20% more tokens to complete equivalent tasks due to lower capability, the economics still favor it by an order of magnitude. The question for enterprise buyers isn’t whether DeepSeek is as good—it measurably isn’t at the frontier—but whether “31x cheaper and almost as good” changes the procurement conversation.

For cost-sensitive workloads, the answer is increasingly obvious. Customer service automation, document summarization, code completion for internal tools, data extraction pipelines—these applications don’t require frontier capability. They require adequate capability at sustainable cost. DeepSeek V3.2 offers precisely that trade.

What Remains Unclear

DeepSeek hasn’t explained how it achieves these prices. The company’s infrastructure costs and economic model remain opaque. Chinese compute costs, government support, and different margin expectations all likely contribute, but the specific breakdown isn’t public.

Market share data is similarly absent. The anecdotal evidence—developer forums, API integration announcements, enterprise pilot programs—suggests growing adoption, but hard numbers on how DeepSeek’s usage compares to OpenAI or Anthropic aren’t available in public sources.

The company’s homepage emphasizes “strengthened Agent capabilities” and “integrated thinking reasoning” for V3.2, but DeepSeek hasn’t published official statements positioning itself against US competitors. The pricing speaks for itself.

The Shift Ahead

For eighteen months, the AI industry operated on an implicit assumption: frontier capability required frontier pricing. DeepSeek V3.2 doesn’t break that assumption at the top of the leaderboard—Opus and GPT-5.4 remain measurably better—but it erodes it everywhere else.

When near-frontier performance costs 3% of frontier pricing, the market segments differently. High-stakes applications that require the best will pay for Opus. Everything else—and “everything else” is most enterprise AI spend—will increasingly ask why.
